Why does the referee stand between them during the boxing match?


He was just dancing around like a buffoon between the two fighters with his eyes fixed on the opponent's face. I didn't understand that at all.


He is not coming back. He has forgotten me.

That was a joke because the Tramp maneuvered things that way to stay away from the opponent.

Chaplin's character tries to place himself behind the referee, so that the opponent can't hit him. As the referee tries to move out of the way, the Tramp/Chaplin copies the referee's moves, so he is behind the referee as long as possible.
