How did Legrand get the 20 francs?

I have watched the final few minutes of this film several times over, and still cannot see where the 20 francs came from. I see Legrand moving towards the car in which his self-portrait sits. The porter restrains him. Legrand watches as the car drives away. He is left standing with two notes in his hand. Where did they come from? Is there a small cut in the copy I have? Can anybody explain, please?

I wasn't watching closely, but I assumed it was from the man who got into the car. That was Legrand's game; he'd wait around for cars to arrive and try to get tips from the people getting in and out of them.

At 1:34:40, while Legrand and Sarge are running toward the car, Sarge picks up two pieces of paper from the street that look a lot like the 20 francs. It looks like he puts them in his jacket pocket. Then there's a cut, and Legrand has the 20 francs in two separate bank notes, but you never actually see where he got them from. Maybe it's a goof, or maybe we're just supposed to understand that Legrand just found them off camera.
