It had to be tough for him to do this movie, as Wallace Beery allegedly hated kids. But he plays it so well without being too hammy. He never really steals a scene from Beery, which is a tribute to Cooper (and Beery for that matter). Wonderful job.

As good as Beery was, the Oscar should have gone to Cooper. It's an astounding performance! =)

I thought Coogan played this part exceptionally well. Upstaged Beery completely.

Jackie Cooper. Jackie Coogan was not in "The Champ", and he was sixteen when it was made.
