Excruciatingly awful movie
I think Joe E. Brown got funnier in his old age.
At this period, he's an annoying one-note comedian like David Spade or Adam Sandler. You either like his very repetitive "schtick" or you hate it. I had to fast-forward through most of this hair-pullingly awful comedy.
The only good bits are those that involve a pre-Dracula Bela Lugosi, who plays the "dupe" in the film, always inadvertently being offended or humiliated by the Brown character. A scene in which he glowers over the top of a restaurant booth foreshadows his classic "Dracula" stare.
The ending is canned and even LOOKS like a cheap live theater set.
Perhaps someone can recommend another JEB film that is actually funny. This certainly isn't it.
PS - Back in the 60s, he did some commercial work and I'm rattling my brain to try to recall what product he was selling. Some candy or other snack, I think. Anyone with a better memory than mine?
