Cagney + Blondell

James and Joan have such good chemistry together! I thought this movie was a lot of fun and I understand that the two of them worked together several other times in other films too. Cagney was once quoted as saying that Joan Blondell was the only woman he loved besides his wife. I believe that Joan was married to Dick Powell during this time period, but does anyone know if Cagney and Blondell ever had "a thing"? They would have made such a cute couple.

Hi HauntedGirl,

This is a very late post but according to Cagmey's autobiography, no. Cagney and Blondell were discovered together on Broadway in the same play, Penny Arcarde and were signed by Warner Brother's to film it. They were both married (she didn't marry Dick Powell however until 1936) and close friends. I agree, they would have made an adorable couple.

Both have clearly stated no - it was more like Clark Gable and Jean Harlow. He loved her like both a sister and a very best friend but never more.
