IMDB's castlist lists him as "uncredited Highway Patrolman", but I just watched it and didn't see any 'Highway Patrolmen'.
The only three parts of the movie where 'highway patrolmen' would be around are the scene with Nat Pendleton as the phony motorcycle cop, the road scenes with the racing scam and the chase after the robbery.

Your eyes are fine. Problem lies with the ocular abilities of another contributor whose expertise with a send button is not matched by his/her familiarity with two of the Golden Age of Hollywood's best known and most easily recognizable supporting players, Ward Bond and Nat Pendleton. Pendleton, of course, plays the cop, who, as you've pointed out is not really a cop at all. Bond does not appear in the film, and, again you're right, there are no genuine highway patrolmen in it either. Actually, I don't really see much similarity between these two actors, but maybe that's because I know them so well. Unfortunately, this same contributor seems to have felt the need to share this erroneous information on the Trivia Board as well, which, hopefully, will soon be deleted.
