Question? We have a DVD copy of THE BLACK CAMEL from CRYPTFLICKS, double billed with CHANDU THE MAGICIAN. Is the THE BLACK CAMEL released through 20th Century Fox video DVD box set of better quality?

reply

I haven't ordered the volume with the Black Camel yet but I have two other volumes from the Fox series. Both of the volumes I have are of good quality--I think they said they restored them. I haven't seen the one from your source so I couldn't make a comparison but the Fox ones so far have been in good condition.

The condition of our BLACK CAMEL is what I would describe as average. Some parts are fairly crisp while others look overexposed or whited out. Sound quality uneven needing ajustment from scene to scene sometimes. Usual dirt (black spots) and dropouts (white spots) so it is not restored. We would say it came from a 16mm print struck off to play in the hinterlands, private use or early T.V. distribution.

I think one or more of scenes must be missing from the 2006 DVD; in particular, the McMasters turn up from nowhere to give Tarnaverro his alibi.

Jason_Radley: Do not have the print issued from 20th Century Fox in their CHAN box sets. Would need that for comparison.

callumr444: Enjoy, check out also CHANDU THE MAGICIAN, Fox. Bela's a real wacko in that one. The BLACK CAMEL was remade during the Sidney Toler years.

callumr444: Well I guess we disagree on that one.

Since I made this post in 2005 both Fox and Warners have released official versions of the Chan movies. One of the Fox sets includes the Black Camel.
