Betty Boop was originally planned to be a sort of "Minnie Mouse" to Bimbo's Mickey. But within a short time she developed as a human character.

I once read an article, can't remember when or where, that claimed a Jewish sub-text to the idea of initiation, the Fleischers as Jewish outsiders, in a period when it was difficult to feel otherwise, looking at the initiation from that point of view.
