Not A Serum, Not A Vaccine...But A Virus!

My recollection from reading this book a couple of years ago is that the medicine Martin Arrowsmith developed for combating bacterial diseases like plague was an anti-bacterial virus, a bacteriophage of some kind. Bacteriophages were discovered independently in Britain by Frederick Twort in 1915 and in France by Félix d'Hérelle in 1917. Attempts have been made since then to use them as alternatives to antibiotics, but without great success.
