Connection to Salo?

Is there one? Early on in the film (before I thought there might be a connection), I thought I heard the word "salo" spoken. Then near the end, the 4 powerful men were said to have spent 120 days in an orgy with teenagers, etc. Seems it might have been an influence on Pasolini.

Haha thank you. I came here for exactly this. I did not hear Salo at the beginning but the end definitely sounded like a precursor to Salo.
"120 days earlier, four godless and unprincipled scoundrels had, driven by their depravity, shut themselves away, to indulge in the most bestial of orgies. To them, the life of a woman mattered no more than that of a fly. They took with them eight lovely adolescent girls to serve as victims for their criminal desires, plus four women well versed in debauchery, whose narrative skills would serve to stimulate their jaded appetites whenever interest flagged."
Seriously, having just seen Salo yesterday and L'Age today, there is no doubt in my mind Pasolini got his entire framework for Salo from this quote. Especially telling is the part about the well versed women telling narrative to spark "interest".

The 120 Days of Sodom is a book written by Marquis de Sade in 1785.

reply

He said "salaud", which is "bastard" in French.

120 Days of Sodom is an 18th century Marquis de Sade novel that both Buñuel and Pasolini were inspired by.
