Harry Earles getting so many lines....


For the most part, you couldn't understand what he was saying.

Same way with him in "Freaks."

It's quite possible his voice was dubbed, and the fact that talkies were so new meant it wasn't done smoothly.

Earles was from Germany and it was possible he still had a thick accent, as his previous work in the circus and in silent movies hadn't necessitated fluency with the English language.

Haha. It's quite obvious his voice WASN'T dubbed. I remember watching Freaks, which was just a few years later, and while he still had an accent, I didn't find any difficulty understanding him. This movie was another story though. At this point he had lived half his life in the United States so I'm guessing he and his siblings continued to speak German to each other so his accent stayed. Then, once talkies came, he probably began losing the accent to be more marketable.
