Sound Wasn't Particularly Kind to William Haines

I've seen quite a few of William Haines' silent films. I can't say that I'm a fan, but I don't hate him either. I'm pretty used to his mugging him way from scene to scene in those silent films, where he can be fairly annoying at times, but he isn't without some charm. Having now watched Remote Control, however, I feel that I'll pass on watching any more of his other soundies. His penchant for making faces and exhibiting odd sorts of body language worked OK in his silents because the style of acting was more physical prior to the arrival of dialogue, which added a new level of realism. In Remote Control, however, those acting choices go from annoying to downright irritating. He seems absolutely childish in several scenes, making it virtually impossible to care for his character. Perhaps his career had already run its course anyway, so his decision to leave film just a short time later for a surprisingly lucrative (or so I've read) second career as an interior designer in Hollywood may have been a wise move.
