Perfect final shot

This may be, in my opinion after seeing thousands of movies, the single greatest closing shot in the history of cinema.

The way von Sternberg holds the shot for so long, far longer than almost any director ever would, allowing Dietrich to come into the frame, climb arduously uphill, and then finally march out of sight, disappearing over the horizon -- and it's all presented without the accompaniment of music other than the drum cadence -- stunning, stirring, and absolutely brilliant.

My sentiments exactly. Just saw it on a big screen tonight in London for the first time in a long time, and the ending makes you catch your breath. Nothing but the sound of the eternal desert wind and the fading drum beat, then it fading to the Paramount logo... NO swelling, orchestral music, no histrionics. It makes the past near 90 years since its release melt away.

I fully agree: it's simple and yet poetic and romantic.
