no oscar for Dietrich

I can't believe this was Marlene Dietrich's only Oscar nomination. She should have won. The other nominations from 1930 were:

Irene Dunne -- Cimarron
Ann Harding -- Holiday
Norma Shearer -- A Free Soul

Marie Dressler won for Min and Bill.

What a shame the Academy denied (and has continued to deny) Marlene Dietrich the recognition she deserved. She was a great actress, and was voted #9 on AFI's greatest female screen legends of all time list. Anyone else think she was robbed?

You can look up all winners and nominees at:

Doesn't anyone care about these old Dietrich-von Sternberg flicks? I can't believe only 487 people have voted on this movie. It's a shame no one cares about the classics anymore.

reply

i care.

I only wish i could see the damn movie.

It sounds wonderful.

When are they going to bring it out on dvd?

reply

I think people care; Von Sternberg is one of those directors whose work is often revisited and appreciated by film scholars/historians now. Marie Dressler may have won the Oscar, but really who remembers her now? Or the other nominees for that matter.

dietrich films are hard to come by even on VHS it seems. Just the other day a collection of 5 dietrich films were released including this one, the devil is a woman, blonde venus, the flame of new orleans, and golden earrings. I have only seen a couple of her films myself, but enjoy both her acting aswell as her music. Heres the best part. I am in my late 20's. It IS hard to find people who enjoy the classics indeed.

I picked up that very collection on eBay for £7.00. I rule!

you very lucky devil! i'm green - with envy, that is.

reply

It's a great collection. It's worth it just for the three von Sternberg films. All of which are fabulous. And it's such a cheap set.

You're right there- Marie Dressler had become MGM's most popular within a very short space of time and worked a LOT to climb the ranks. At least Marlene had many more years to go...though it's a pity that they didn't consist of additional Oscar nominations...

This was a good performance, but according to Dietrich, Amy Jolly came from von Sternberg's direction, not Dietrich's skill as an actress. No idea how true this is--she tended to exaggerate von Sternberg's influence over her in later years. I think her best performance may have been in "Witness for the Prosecution." She was completely ignored by the Academy, probably because of a combination of things--she wasn't credited for **spoiler** her double role in order to preserve secrecy about the plot and I think her performance was somewhat over-shadowed by Elsa Lanchester's excellent comic turn as Nurse Plimsoll. Dietrich gives a layered, brittle performance as Christine Vole and she deserved recognition.

I agree that she should've been nominated for Witness for the Prosecution. In fact, she should have won! But that was the year Ingrid Bergman got her "apology" Oscar for Anastasia.
Marlene should also have been nominated for A Foreign Affair.. But the AMPAS is misguided more often than not.

reply

Agree re A Foreign Affair. Weren't the first two made in different years, though?

reply

She's criminally underrated as an actress, IMHO. She deserved to be nominated at least 6 times and win at least once. Since that never happened, an Honorary Oscar was a must. What a shame.
