I don't know why but no one who's writing I've looked at seem to wish to note that Bella is a prostitute, Min was probably a prostitute when she was younger and Nancy is sent off the the middle class only when she is in danger of being seduced and led into prostitution. And all in 1930.

1930 was the Pre-Code period. Until the Hays Code was enforced in 1934, the movies before then would feature sexual innuendo, promiscuity, prostitution, infidelity, illegal drug use, etc. Check out this risque locker room scene from Search for Beauty with bare bums.
