Missing scenes?

I just watched this the other night, and felt that there was a rather noticeable gap in the action. I don't know if it's just the print that I saw (on a Mill Creek 20 movie pack) or not. My print runs 66 mins., as is listed here, but here's what I noticed:

At around the 38 minute mark, the girl has just been put to bed after receiving a beating from her father. At the circus tent, Jack Benny and his vaudeville friends overhear the sheriff saying they're going to be run out of town. Fade to black.

Fade up from black, and the girl is in the street meeting Jack Benny at his car, thanking him for sending over the nice new clothes she has on. There's no transition between the previous scene and this one.

Granted, it is possible that the audience was just supposed to fill in this gap, but it has the feel that something was filmed, and then maybe removed to shorten the running time. Of course, I doubt that such a scene would have improved the film much, I was just wondering if anyone knew for certain.
