I'm 48 minutes into the film and I can't watch one minute more of this nonsense. Barring thieves and murders I can't recall any other character who repulsed me as much as Tom Ward. He is actually a thief and a good portion of his behavior is criminal. I love old movies particularly pre-code but I wouldn't recommend this to my worst enemy. I really hate it.

I was curious about what you said so I watched the rest after taking a break. I see we are supposed to feel sorry for him but he still continued to be a selfish jerk. You're right it's not enough. The only thing different about him was he was no longer rich. Thanks for letting me know.
