'Buster sounds a lot like Dustin Hoffman'.

To me in this film Buster`s voice sounds very much like Dustin Hoffman.Does anyone else hear the similarity as well?

I always thought he sounded like someone, but I couldn't pick who. All I know is the first time I heard his voice I thought it was much deeper than expected. Now I think it fits, and I can see how it fits his character, but I think his silent-screen persona was so diminutive, I expected his voice to be a bit smaller, more quiet; unfortauntely Buster was deaf in one ear, so he tended to talk a bit louder than he should have sometimes; I think he's quite good in Free and Easy, despite its reputation. I prefer it to The Saphead, as far as Buster starring in projects not helmed by him.

Ben,thank you for your reply.I guess I`m alone in thinking that Buster Keaton`s voice sounds like Dustin Hoffman somewhat to me.I agree in his silent works I assumed he had a higer sqeaky like voice due to his characters and antics. As well I agree with your assesment of his speach before his rolls employed audio yet when he finnaly speaks starting with "Free and Easy" A.K.A. "Easy Go" I grew to like it and it fits him rather well at least for me.I think that some scenes in "Free and Easy" that Buster was somewhat intoxicated as he tends to slur and act like it here and there throughout that film.I grew to like and appreciate "Free and Easy" the more I viewed it.In my opinion the ending was totally 100% dead absurdly wrong.Other than that it`s quite a tour-de-force performance from Keaton.Even the title song still sticks in my mind. All in all it`s a decent, enjoyable film and I still pick up something new at every viewing. One thing that just totaly undeniably blows my mind is that the girl co-starring in "Free and Easy" her name escapes me at this moment.Anyway the Gopher Queen and the object and rejected love of Buster`s character STILL IS ALIVE TO THIS DAY!!! WOW that`s just so mind blowing to me I am at a loss to express it further. As I have only seen this movie and Keatons,"The General" I am very much interested in viewing Keaton`s other films when and wherever I get the chance to do so.I find it amazingly sad that it took so long before Keaton was really given his proper due for his work and unfortunate that he had many demons to deal with durring his life.I hope he is now at peace. Thanks again for your reply.I hope you had a nice summer so far and I wish the best for you and yours in the future. Most Sincerely,-Bruce

Anita Page. More unbelievable is, not only is she still alive, but she was still ACTING as of 2004, according to her bio!!

I never noticed you wrote me such a nice reply, Shotgunnergauge. I hope in the intervening years you've managed to catch up on Buster's many wonderful movies, and that, if you've upgraded to HD, you've heard Kino are bringing The General to blu-ray.

If you still need recommendations of Buster movies, I'd be happy to give them. Unfortunately you can't subscribe to posts, so you don't find out when someone's written to you. If you're interested in forums that help you keep in touch with other posters better, try Home Theatre Forum, and, if you're onto blu ray, Bluray.com is okay.

I didn't think Buster sounded like Dustin Hoffman or anyone else that I can think of.

It is great hearing his voice in the early talkies and could only wish that I could hear the voices of more silent film stars in their movies. But then again you wouldn't want to change that art form.
