Nothing against Keaton but his drinking started well before the MGM contract. Unfortunately, he had several very big injuries (to the neck) from his earlier movies but most people noted that Buster was always a heavy drinker. I believe reports that his father was an alcoholic as well.

Of course his MGM contract and his marriage ending made the drinking worse.
