Norma Shearer's performance was fantastic!

Having never seen this film before, I thought it would turn out to be the typical boring/dated film from Hollywood's era of early talkies. But wow, I was blown away by Shearer's performance. It was a surprisingly modern performance, considering the time period that this film was made (the early 1930s). She rightfully won an Oscar for this performance.

I agree, her performance has aged quite well, especially compared to the overacting that was typical in the 30s.

Plus she looks downright amazing!

Alix1929; Agreed, Norma Shearer would not be called a conventional beauty, but neither was Barbara Stanwyck. Both undeniably had SEX APPEAL and had a strong physical presence. In Her first scene you could see Ms. Shearer had good muscle tone and was obviously committed to fitness.

I saw it 3 years ago, a good intriguing oldie but goodie.

It's one of her most natural, unaffected performances in general.
