Most horrific scene in any movie (spoiler)

Forget The Exorcist, Alien, , The Evil Dead, Freaks, Freddy/Jason/Michael or any other screamfest. The sequence with the professor going insane before our very eyes has to be one of the most horrific moments in film history. Classic!

reply

I would have to agree. The look on Lola's face as the professor breaks down is just disturbing.

reply

Yeah I agree. Coupled with the cock-a-doodle-do that the professor keeps on repeating I felt both compassion and fear for what his iminent insanity would bring to those around he.

Legend has it than Emil Jannings resented newcomer (and upstart) Marlene Dietrich so much that it isn't any surprise that the "choking" scene has an eerie touch of realism to it! Dietrich herself has said that he really was choking her in that scene and it was almost impossible for her to get him to remove his hands from her neck when director Lang had already yelled "Cut!" several times.

reply

Not to be an assh*le, but I guess you mean Mr. von Sternberg and not Mr. Lang.

reply

I just finished the movie and the chills are still on the back of my neck. I've always wondered what the big deal was about Jannings, but after this movie and that freak out scene, it all makes sense to me. WOW just WOW.

reply

The fact he was also dressed as a scary clown amplified the matter!

True. Emil Jannings crowing sent chills up my spine!

"Now what kind of man are YOU dude?"

reply

I found it pretty disturbing myself. And I'm not that easily disturbed by movies.

reply

Yes, it was a powerful and disturbing scene. The imbecile I watched it with started laughing during it, a response I could not tolerate!!! Needless to say an altercation ensued, the result being he left the room

I agree

the last 5 minutes of that film are extremely powerful.

Emil Jannings was incredible.

I used to love that song by Dietrich,
but it will never be the same again.

reply

Totally agree. I first saw this movie over twenty years ago during a rough time. I found it incredibly profound and have seen it at least a dozen times. It never loses its poignancy.

reply

Just watched this film after having it on my DVR for quite awhile. It is a very disturbing scene and I found it difficult to watch. Great acting by Mr. Jannings, you don't see something like that too often these days.
