Lon Chaney

I've often seen references to Wallace Beery's' part having been slated for Lon Chaney. But...this film was released before Chaney's only talkie, The Unholy Three, so was it filmed before, at the same time, or afterwards? Maybe some production data on when these were filmed would help, otherwise why didn't Chaney make The Big House, and then The Unholy Three afterwards as one would conclude from the release dates? Thanks!
