What happened to Tjaden?

I've never figured out what happens to him. In the book it says that Paul wills Kemmerich's boots to him after Muller dies, and that's the last mention of him that I know of.

So what happened to him? Does anyone know?

I don't know... we never see him die, I think.

pokeman?! pokeman with the poke and the man and the thing where the guy comes out

in the book it says that someone (forget who) inherits the boots tjaden wanted and got. it was either kat or paul.
btw have you even read the book? it mentions tkaden MANY times after that point. i had to read it for a school thing over the summer.

I would like to give you a brief history of the inside of my pants.

badarsemotherk, it was Paul who took the boots after Moller. Tjaden was next to have them. That was the last mention of Tjaden in the book. We will never know what happened to him later.

THINK! :)

Theres a sequence in the film where the camera follows the boots showing the wearers being killed.

Sadly

Tjaden gets killed shortly after KAt (we never see it). as well. However he had a "merciful death" a bullet to the head. It was then that Paul was truly alone

Note: Himmelstoss dies on the same day as Tjaden. In the book Himmelstoss tries to make up to Paul for his ill treatment.

(Note I got this from the 79 version)

Read The Road Back by Erich Maria Remarque. Essentially, it is the sequel to All Quiet On The Western Front (naturally from a different perspective). I won't spoil it for any of you who haven't read it, but I'll tell you this: Tjaden doesn't die.

Check out the book anyway. It is a masterpiece.

Just my luck, my local library only carries two books by Erich Maria Remarque and one is this one, but the Road Back ain't the other one.

Tjaden doesn't die; it may state that in the movie, but the movie changes things, they all do, so go by the book: it never mentioned if he died, so he didn't. Apparently he's in The Road Back, so that's a major clue that he survived the war. I really liked him, he was funny, so I'm glad he lived. It's kind of the same with Albert; the last we hear of him he was in the hospital, so we don't know what happened to him. Kinda sad; I liked him too. But a really good book; made me cry, but that's how good it was!

I think in the book Paul promised his boots to Tjaden if he (Paul) ever gets killed. Since Paul is the narrator, we don't witness his death, and the event is told to us by an anonymous third person in the epilogue. I don't remember any reference to Tjaden.
In the film, the last we see or hear of Tjaden is when Paul returns from his leave and runs into him, and then goes to find Kat. Kat gets killed, and the next scene is the butterfly-in-the-trench sequence. No clue as to Tjaden's fate either.
