Face on the poster

Often wondered about the face on the ad/poster/dvd cover. It isn't Paul (Lew Ayers) Is that suppose to be Kat (Louis Wolheim)?

Just wondering.

The battle sequence is really great, especially the short scene where Paul witness a French soldier grab the wire, explodes and then all you see are the hands on the wire...this brief but effective scene must have startled viewers like the opening scenes of Saving Private Ryan did decades later.

I like the camera movements and sound of the film, especially since it was made so early in the talkies era. Watch this Universal picture with its use of camera movement and watch films like Dracula or Frankenstein made one year later both from Universal pictures.

I wondered the same thing. It doesn't look like anyone in the film.

I agree with all your comments about the film. The camera work and charge scene are incredible.

I think it is just a face used specifically for the poster. It looks great though! And I also love the movie.

reply

Exactly. All quiet. His eyes describe the horror.. the horror...

The movie poster is indeed one of the best movie posters of the century.

It's Behm.

reply

I think it's Behn as well.

To me it looked like the guy who was talking about wanting to go home to help his wife with harvesting the cherry orchard.

It's obviously Kat, i.e. Louis Wolheim

It's not Kat, it's Behn (Walter Rogers).

He's easily identifiable in the classroom scene in the beginning of the film, he's the last student to say he will enlist after he gets talked into it by all the other students. The sad, ironic twist is he is the first of the students to get killed when he loses his eyesight from a shell blast and then stumbles into no man's land.
