Airing on TCM on 5/21/2008

"Their Own Desire" will be shown on TCM in two weeks on 5/21/2008 at 7 AM EDT. Since this film isn't on DVD (and I doubt it will be in the near future), fans will want to set your DVRs to record this rare airing of one of Norma Shearer's early Oscar nominated performance.

reply

Ha! I'm watching it on TCM right now, 05/21/2009. Does TCM show the same movies on the same dates each year or something?

reply

Hey, I just noticed that too! WTF??
Pretty good movie, but the ending was a bit of a stretch. Shearer and Montgomery have good chemistry, as evident in "The Divorcee"

reply

pedro4300; It was ROBERT MONTGOMERY's' birthday. The film fit the time-slot so it was probably a coincidence and birthday film tend to be repeated.

On another topic, did you notice how fit NORMA SHEARER was. Do not see what JOAN CRAWFORD was talking about, there is nothing wrong with that woman's figure at all. She would translate very well in the 21st Century.

reply

I have become a MASSIVE fan of Shearer's films this past year.
My favorite being "A Free Soul" (wow!)
Others I have enjoyed of hers recently-
The Divorcee (2nd best)
Smilin' Through (1932)
Riptide (1934)
Lady of the Night (1925)

Joan, as great as she was, was just jealous of Shearer because she had first pick.

As a straight red-blooded male, I find Shearer HOT! I love that she was so passionate in her roles and wore some very revealing clothes that got my blood going! She went bra-less before it became the rage! A true trendsetter and forward thinking individual that Hollywood has yet to duplicate. Not even the modern actresses of today seem to be as advanced as she was. The worse thing to happen to Hollywood was the Hayes Code. Just imagine what Shearer would have really done post 1935 without that stupid code! Her and Stanwyck.

reply

pedro4300; Fortunetly todays Women have superior designed 'bras' gravity and time is wearing no matter how fit.

The purpose of the 'Hayes Code' was to restore order. In those days every State and sometimes City had it's own code. Which would have led to the nightmare of literally dozens of different versions of the code and what the films had to conform to. It was a economic necessity of the time. Not the best choice but better then the alternative. Why nobody just came up with something like today's rating system I have no answer for.

Interesting I (Heter-Male) also find along with SHEARER, STANWYCK to have strong sexual appeal. Neither would you call conventual beauties and both fit. Then again today, neither are KATE WINSLET or CATE BLANCHETT and they also have the same strong physical attractions.

reply

I agree, xerses13, 100% Norma and Stanwyck may not have been considered "gorgeous" ladies, but I do!

Back to the babes, another actress I find terribly appealing, and just simply ravishing from that golden era, was Myrna Loy! Her exotic looks was put to great use during her "Vamp" days! She was ravishing in "The Mask of Fu-Manchu" as Karloff's daughter, as well as many others in her pre-Thin Man days. Too many others to name, really, but Loy, Shearer and Stanwyck were the complete packages.
Also- Ruth Chatterton & Mae Clark!

reply

pedro4300; Agreed, except RUTH CHATTERTON, though she is a fine actress (DODSWORTH, 1936, etc.) she never appealed to me. Have recently gotten a copy of THE BLACK WATCH (1929) FOX, John Ford directing. This was one of MS. LOYs' early sound films when she was still in her erotic/exotic period. You may read our review under the xerses13 aegis.

reply

Ruth- She's good in Dodsworth, but she really shines in Female (Curtiz-1933) and in Frisco Jenny (Wellman-1932). Two scorching films that show her true talents. If you have not seen either of these I highly recommend them.

The Black Watch-
Before I read the review, I must watch the movie first. In general, people put way too much info in their reviews and I like to wait until after I see the film. Too many key moments are ruined for me. (where did you find the movie, btw?)

reply

pedro4300; Have seen all films mentioned and all very good. Good luck finding THE BLACK WATCH (1929) on T.V. I have seen it because I have a copy through JOHN HOFF [email protected]. Mr. Hoff has about 10,000 rare titles available through various sources. Send him a e-mail and he will promptly get back concerning price and availability. Turn-around time about ten (10) business days. Would only do that though if you MUST HAVE every JOHN FORD film for your collection.

If you have seen KING OF THE KHYBER RIFLES (1953) 20th Century Fox that is a remake of THE BLACK WATCH (1929). There are differences though, none of consequence are mentioned in our review. We do not do synopsises of films like others do. Compare our review of SKIPPY (1931) with the other commentator and you will see the difference in our style. Have looked at your reviews try ours.

I'll definitely take a look at your reviews. You really know what you're talking about. Can't wait!
I'm a bit of a completest (bad or good, I'll watch it all), so I'll eventually get to Black Watch. And I'll be checking out John Hoff soon! :P

I just noticed you wrote a review for "Sweepings" I had read and enjoyed a while back!
I always thought that Gregory Ratoff's character was gypped and given a raw deal. Those kids of Barrymore did not deserve Barrymore for a father!

reply

pedro4300; Glad you enjoyed our comments/reviews, hoped you voted accordingly. As for SWEEPINGS, yes GREGORY RATTOFs' character 'seemed' to get a raw deal, but remember, he ended up with partial control of the company.

Answering almost eight years later, but I remember 5/21/2008 quite well. It was Robert Montgomery's birthday and TCM was airing a bunch of his seldom seen late 20s and early 30s movies. My recorder went on the blink and I lost all of them! it took me five years to record what I could have gotten in that one day. I still call it "The Great Robert Montgomery Birthday Tribute Recording Disaster of 2008". I really need to get a life don't I?

reply

Set your DVR's! Guess what TCM will be airing on Tues., 6/28/2016, between 4:30-6:00 AM? "Their Own Desire"! Enjoy, you all.
