Horrible Synthesizer Soundtrack on Kino DVD

It's a testament to how powerful this film is that I still recognized its greatness despite the pathetic, horribly inappropriate synthesizer soundtrack. Kino is usually a leader in quality releases of world cinema. However I was very disappointed with this release.

I just saw it on Netflix and the soundtrack was different. A lot of flutes, but no synthesizer. It wasn't bad

reply

Hmmm... Maybe they did a new score. The DVD I rented was probably a few years old.

reply

No. It's the same score. All synth and piano (presumably digital). Very poor soundtrack. The same 6 or 7 music cues over and over and none of the music is appropriate for the particular scenes. Sounds like the music was chosen rather than written or scored for the film and they just placed the same cues wherever without much thought.

I fully agree: such a beautiful movie full or visually powerful scenes and that synthetizer that nearly cheapens everything. If an orchestra wasn't possible due to budget issues, that piano alone would have been alright. Same happened with Kino's DVD of Intolerance and -to a certain extent- Broken Blossoms.

BTW, the print quality wasn't the best, either.

The DVD I have is on Eureka and it says in the notes "new piano score by Javier Perez De Aspeitia".Its a really fitting score for the film.
