"Loveable and Sweet"

This is the signature song in the movie, and it was recorded many times on 78's. For some reason Oscar Levant who wrote the music never talks about it in his autobiographies (he wrote a couple of memoirs). He talks about a couple of other songs he wrote, which are now almost forgotten. But this song, like "Charleston," captures the mood of the "Flapper Age" with its jazzy rhythms and uptempo drive. As some commentator noted, Annette Hanshaw's rendition is wonderful, better than the Sammy Fane version I first heard as a kid on my parents' record player. Sammy's version is not on YouTube, but Annette's is; and to hear Annette is to listen to a early jazz singer better than the more famous Ruth Etting. Check her out on YouTube, and you won't listen to Jack Oakie without cringing.
