1929 or 1932?

Wikipedia says the film was released in '29 but IMDb says '32. Which one is accurate?

reply

From two other resources, in addition to Wikipedia, I found the year 1929. I guess IMDb has made a mistake? Even the national audiovisual archive of Finland suggests that Queen Kelly was made in 1929. Well... this wouldn't be the only mistake in this database.

The film started production in 1929, but was shut down by the studio and never 'officialy' finished.

Swanson managed to put together a finished version in 1931 with an alternate ending directed by herself for release on the European market in 1932. The movie was actually never officialy released in the U.S.

So everybody's right, and everybody's wrong.

I believe it was shown in the US close to the time Sunset Boulevard was released and again on TV during the 1960s. Von Stroheim would not let it be released in the US with the alternate ending and he had contractual power to do that.

In his introductory remarks to the movie, TCM host Robert Osborne says that QUEEN KELLY wasn't shown in the U.S. until "the mid 1980s, almost twenty-five years after Erich von Stroheim had died."
