Captivating silent movie treasure.
This is a movie I had never heard of before, that I was so fortunate as to view on TCM earlier this (early) morning.
I was highly impressed by the new (2006) score, which perfectly suits the mood and action taking place at any given time. It's a fully accessible score to present-day Western ears, while, at the same time, being culturally exotic at times, in a very appealing way. I found the new score to be a perfect fit for this sumptuous old movie.
I also enjoyed and appreciated the appealing and attractive cast. Fortunately, they weren't bogged down in overacting that is so rampant in many silent films. The picture quality of this movie's restoration is exceptional - pristine and "alive" throughout - and served to further enhance the viewing experience. This is a movie that is easily watchable on all levels.
