Misdescribed as 42nd Street premake ?

A ways ago I read a book on 30s/-ish films , IIRC dating back to the early 80s (so basically , anyway , pre-the home video era/at its very beginning) that mentioned that this film was shown at MOMA in NYC at times and that , when it was , THE NEW YORKER's film listings would inaccurately describe it as an earlier version of the same source material that " 42d Street " was based on , that the generally pret' accurate Eustace had formed an inaccurate impression somehow (Yes ~ As the listing here indicates , this film ~ though featuring an pretty similar " A B'Way show tries to get itself going " plotline ~ was based on a different source than " 42S " , just that no one here thinks that I think that that is so .) .
Anyone remember: That book ? Seeing the TNY listing ? How it got corrected ? Seeing this at MOMA (or anywhere else) back in the day ?
