What did you rate 'The Manxman' (1929)?

Alfred Hitchcock's last silent film is a melodrama about a love triangle. A fisherman and a rising young lawyer, who grew up as brothers, fall in love with the same girl.

The film is very, very slow; but it's also lovely and poignant. Hitchcock, as a director, is unobtrusive. There's nothing characteristic about it, except that it reveals his sure eye for detail and knack for making the most out of every single moment.

The Manxman was my least favorite Hitchcock film, until this second viewing. The first time I saw it, the film was projected too slow (which is the last thing this already-slow film needs), had a washed-out-looking print, and was burdened with an awful music score. The cheapie DVD version I just watched looks very good. The score was okay, but it was just something slapped on, not a true score. I turned the sound off after a few minutes and played some Mozart.

I changed my rating from a 3 to a 7. What did you rate the film?

You are right and I rated 7, the same as you. Guess is the correct rating...

Hello, pywalkye2. Did you give it that rating after only seeing it once?

I listened to this CD: http://www.amazon.com/Mozart-Adagios/dp/B00000IIZ. It didn't suit the movie, but at least it was pleasant. With any luck these Hitchcock silent films will get released with good scores that were written for them.

Actually, The Lodger seems to be available with a good score. I saw a clip of the film on YouTube. Much better print and much better score than the version I own. But I don't know where it came from.

Did you know The Lodger is being remade? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0851530/. And Easy Virtue is being remade with Emma Thompson as the mother. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Py1aEaV_r_o

I wa sunaware the Lodger was being remade but i am aware of the Easy Virtue Remake. I remember gasping in shock when watching the trailer ecently with Jessica Biel in the leading role.

reply

The trailer for Easy Virtue makes the movie look very, very bad. I hold out more hope for The Lodger remake. I have no hope at all for Strangers on a Train (2008). http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0455788/ What's the point in that?

quick question, Surlin, do you know where i can see the rest of Hitchcock's silent films, becuase on the dvd i got , wich i paid %10 for, there is only The Lodger, The Ring, Easy Virtue, Farmer's Wife and The Manxman.

reply

This is what I own: http://www.amazon.com/Alfred-Hitchcock-Legend-Begins-Classics/dp/B000U VV25Q. It has The Lodger, The Ring, Easy Virtue, The Farmer's Wife, The Manxman and Champagne.

The unfinished Number 13 (1922) is lost. According to the database the comedy two-reeler, Always Tell Your Wife (1923) (for which Hitchcock is the uncredited co-director) is half-missing. I doubt that it's available on DVD. The Mountain Eagle (1925) is long lost.

I don't know where to find The Pleasure Garden (1925), the first feature film he made. Nor can I find Downhill. Both movies exist. People have seen them and reviewed them for the database.

I've got these:

http://www.ezydvd.com.au/item.zml/795801

Those are the movies in my collection. It seems that companies specializing in public domain films always offer those films, but don't have easy access to Pleasure Garden or Downhill.

The one thing I have that you don't is Champagne. But shop around that online store, or go to Amazon (assuming they offer service in Australia). It shouldn't be too difficult to find. The hard ones will be the two I mentioned above.

I gave it an 8/10. I'm not sure why. I usually go with the Netflix rating system, where 4 stars is "really liked it," and I adjust it so a ten point scale for imdb. For whatever reason, I did really like it. It seemed slow and melodramatic, which normally wouldn't be my cups of tea. Yet, I was completely engrossed in it and enjoyed the experience of watching it.

6 - I WAS impressed by the sparing use of title cards. Very creative.
