What did you rate 'The Manxman' (1929)?
Alfred Hitchcock's last silent film is a melodrama about a love triangle. A fisherman and a rising young lawyer, who grew up as brothers, fall in love with the same girl.
The film is very, very slow; but it's also lovely and poignant. Hitchcock, as a director, is unobtrusive. There's nothing characteristic about it, except that it reveals his sure eye for detail and knack for making the most out of every single moment.
The Manxman was my least favorite Hitchcock film, until this second viewing. The first time I saw it, the film was projected too slow (which is the last thing this already-slow film needs), had a washed-out-looking print, and was burdened with an awful music score. The cheapie DVD version I just watched looks very good. The score was okay, but it was just something slapped on, not a true score. I turned the sound off after a few minutes and played some Mozart.
I changed my rating from a 3 to a 7. What did you rate the film?
