Tablecloth trick

Y'know, I've only seen the whipping-the-tablecloth-from-under-the-priceless-crystal routine parodied and satirized on the old variety shows like Ed Sulllivan and The Hollywood Palace. I guess it was performed (presumably straight, as Lupino Lane does in the first scene of Love Parade) by a lot of vaudeville acts.

It seems I'm not as hardened a cynic as I had once thought, because seeing the gag performed for real made my eyes bug. I must have re-watched that bit a zillion times, both at speed and slo-mo. Dang. It's really pretty cool!

Lou Costello actually does it in Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein as well.

That was my reaction to Lupino Lane's first major fall, splat onto the hard floor. Ouch.
