Could some kind person please tell me if Irene really shot her husband to save the boy or was there more to it ? And,if so how did she get off? Had to leave room a moment near very end-thanks so much.

Surely by now, three years later, you know what happened but, in case you don't, here goes.

Andre, Irene's defense attorney and former lover, suggests Guarry, Irene's husband, committed suicide. Pierre's father seals the deal; testifying Guarry was on the verge of bankruptcy and in despair. Irene is acquitted of murder.

After everyone leaves Pierre comes in. He thinks Irene protected him because she loves him. She says no. He wonders if there's someone else; is she afraid Andre will find out. She's visibly shaken. He understands the 'someone else' is Andre. He says he won't tell him. Irene says she must. Pierre tells her Andre will think she lied because she loves him, Pierre; meaning she'll lose Andre.

Pierre thinks Irene will come to him eventually. When Andre returns, Pierre leaves and she tells him to whole story. She did kill Guarry; she couldn't let him kill the kid. Andre is shocked by all this. She lied to him, what else could she be lying about? After a moment, he says he believes and loves her. They kiss. The cleaning women interrupt them saying they have to clean the court. They laugh. These are the same three who earlier were saying most women would kill their husbands if they had the nerve.

I think they believed she was guilty all along and are not at all surprised to find her locked in an embrace with her lawyer/lover. The women probably believe he was in on it or aware of her guilt. Thinking she killed her husband to be with her lover.
