My favourite part of 'The Hollywood Revue of 1929'...

My 94-year-old mother and I watched "The Hollywood Revue of 1929" on TCM yesterday, and both of us loved the long "Singing In the Rain" number. Can't help but feel GREAT, and tap your toes, and sing or hum, along, to that peppy gem! I FAR prefer the performance of the song in this film to how performed in the much later "Singing In the Rain" feature movie. In the 1929 film, I give everything about the extended number a perfect 10 score! The "Singing In the Rain" number at the end of this film, featuring big stars of the day, is also enjoyable to watch, though it's the long feature section (I think 6-some minutes) in I believe it's the late mid-section of the film that both my mother and I REALLY seriously enjoyed.

There are some really great parts in this - I'm glad that you're able to watch this with your mother.

The style of singing that was popular at the time is good in small doses. The Keaton number is pretty funny, bizarre, and surrealistic. Anita Page looked incredible while Conrad Nagle was singing to her. She was incredibly beautiful.

I thought the same thing!

I just watched my DVR recording of this film from TCM's Feb.22 airing, and was enlightened by the end number. To see all those stars together performing in raincoats(including one of my favorites Marie Dressler, not to mention Buster Keaton) was darn exciting.
