So why is this film mostly lost?


And yeah, I know the usual reasons for film loss (neglect, decay, fires, intentional destruction, etc.)

But isn't it perplexing that this film, the highest grossing film of all time from 1929 to 1939, exists in an incomplete state while other mediocre films from the same studio (On With the Show and Show of Shows) are still extant (albeit in black and white.) Was Gold Diggers so popular that the release copies simply wore out from overuse and other copies/negatives were discarded?
