Lina and Sam Warner

One of the comment posters here noted the irony that Lina had been married to Sam Warner, the "brother" most responsible for the making of "The Jazz Singer," the film that ushered in the talkie era.

The irony goes far deeper than that. Sam Warner worked himself to death on that film, leaving Lina, his bride of just about two years, a widow with a young child. They were also left without much money, until the flood gates opened and the revenues from "the Jazz Singer" came pouring in.

At that point, the other brothers, especially Jack, realized that Sam's share of the profits were going to go to Lina, who the others thought of as a tramp who had enticed Sam into marrying here. They set about from that date on trying to get her stock in Warners away from her, and also getting the child, too, because Lina was not Jewish and they didn't want the kid raised in a non-Jewish household.

Supposedly, the Brothers were the ones who arranged for DeMille to test Lina for Godless Girl and were happy that it pretty much ruined her career. They were later able to buy her shares of Warner Brothers stock from her for something in the neighborhood of $90,000. They also eventually got custody of the child, too.
