I haven't saw this movie but I wondered if this is the film that ispired the Smashing Pumpkins Video Tonight Tonight?

No that would be the film "A Trip to the Moon" by Georges Melies from 1902. That had a purely fantastic moon trip & a moon full of weird creatures that get zapped via stop motion tricks. Woman in the Moon is a much more serious film without aliens (well almost).
