What did you think of 'Eternal Love'?

Ernst Lubitsch gets fine performances out of his cast and employs many subtle touches (see: the scene where Barrymore discovers the mountain girl in his bed) and gliding camera moves to enhance a plain story of ill-starred love. I enjoyed it.

What did you think?

It's a miracle Lubitsch was able to get a strong performance out of Camilla Horn. She was so hopelessly awful in the previous year's Tempest that it approached Sofia Coppola levels of bad acting. The movie itself is missing Lubitsch's touch except for a few moments, so I'd consider it a lesser Lubitsch picture but that's still pretty good.

I posted this over two years ago, and now I've forgotten most of the movie. I enjoyed it, but it clearly was not unforgettable.

Funny coincidence you replying now. I just watched Lubitsch's Love Parade (1929) last night. I'm sure I won't forget that one as quickly. What other Lubitsch movies have you seen?

I saw The Love Parade a couple weeks ago and really enjoyed it. It's certainly better than Eternal Love.

The other Lubitsch films I've seen are The Student Prince in Old Heidelberg, Trouble in Paradise, The Shop Around the Corner, and To Be or Not to Be. All of those are superb.

To Be or Not to Be is so good. I'm grateful to Lubitsch for putting Jack Benny in his best movie by far. I love Jack Benny.

I'm about to watch The Shop Around the Corner. I've seen Ninotchka and Heaven Can Wait in a revival theater. Enjoyed them both.

I'm watching it know. I have not seen too much of John Barrymore's work.
