Oscar Levant, where are you?

I will admit I only watched this because I wanted to see what Oscar Levant was like at 23 years old. I've been reading his bio A Talent for Genius and seeing as many of his films as I can, because I think he was absolutely unique. I found the film heavy going and some of the chorus numbers just numbingly awful. Perhaps they were meant to be, in contrast with the splaslhy Ziegfeld numbers where the girls had such strange headgear. Reminded me of the big pretzels in The Producers. Anyway, I watched and watched, and no Oscar Levant, so I started fast-forwarding. Turned out I forwarded over the 30 seconds or so that he's on-screen. He does play piano offscreen with his usual panache, but in that brief time onscreen he really didn't look or sound much different than he did in his 40s when he was in An American in Paris. Maybe he was born middle-aged. The pace of this movie is very, very slow, but then so are all movies from that era. It was a different time, what can I say?
