Just finally got to see this gem and generally saying it was even better than I expected. No way inferior to the other early Marx-films and the songs are also great.
Some points however needed extra attention.
Quality of the film is not always great. The film was generally in good condition, but some scenes were a bit 'worn out'. Has the film been compiled from different reels? The scenes that were obscure were 'Stealing the Badge', 'Woman asking Chico and Groucho into her Room', 'Monkey Doodle Doo Song', 'The Auction Scene' and 'Harpo's Jailbreak'.
The DVD featured three short extras from 'Today's Show' with Harpo, Groucho and Harpo's son William.
Yup. I forget the exact story--something about certain scenes just deteriorating or getting lost, and having to be replaced with copies that weren't as clear. Apparently, with Universal's most recent release, they made no real attempt to rectify that problem--or maybe there was just nothing they could do anymore. The changing quality from scene to scene is quite a jolt, and it's certainly one of the reasons this film gets slammed as much as it does, but of course that wasn't really the Marx Brothers' fault...

I just was after an interesting idea... that the film had been sometime broadcast as an 'edited' version and some 'lost' bits were extracted from a lesser quality reel. But if that sounds too crazy then it's perhaps not true. You know at least more about these matters. Have you heard the DVD commentary track on the 'Night at the Opera'?
I'm not sure. I suppose there certainly could've been other Italy references--maybe the Leaning Tower was pictured in the background of a scene, maybe a character spoke Italian in another scene, I don't know. I suppose Maltin would know if anyone. But I'm sure it's too late for those to be recovered now.
It's a good thing they didn't cut Chico out completely, though!

There are still many extant references to Italy, like persons names Fiorello, Tomasso, Lasparri... The three aviators are also like some Italians, but they are just funny characters.
I believe that the film had similar opening scene as 'Duck Soup' with Margareth Dumont as Mrs.Claypool, again as rich woman, who wants Driftwood to be appointed as manager of the new opera, but Gottlieb objects. (This is of course speculation, but suits in the plot).

I also believe that all scenes with the brothers are extant. All those short jumps in the film are director's faults.
Play it again, Frank, I don't give a damn. reply share

Some cuts are much lighter, I'm sure that could be digitally improved to make it more even. They obviously made no effort to restore it before they threw it on DVD. Maybe there will be a Criterion release someday...

Most of film the was in surprisingly good condition. I just noticed that something had happened to those scenes above mentioned. Why I suspected some 'editing' was because all those scenes had something explicit that moral censors found flammable during that time. 'Stealing the Badge from Policeman' is an insult towards authorities and 'Woman inviting into her Room' is alike. Just thought...

"However, this film is still in need of a major restoration.
I can't believe that Universal wouldn't put out the efort to put a little care into a classic like this. Is that asking too much?
That's one of the reasons I prefer 20th Century Fox's DVD releases to many of the "restored" versions out there from other companies. Yes, many of the restored discs Fox puts out are of public domain films, but they still get far better treatment than many of the copyrighted classic films. If you took a look at Fox's restored discs of something like "My Man Godfrey" or "House on Haunted Hill," you'll notice that their black and white prints look superb.
I bet if the Paramount Marx Brothers movies were in the public domain, they'd get better treatment than they do now." ________________________________________________________
The thing you have to realize is that there is simply no better print of this film available to restore from. Public domain films often appear in second-generation dupes, and the restorations are done from the original master print for optimal quality.
The Marx Bros. Paramounts are over 70 years old, and look as good as most films from that period. THE COCOANUTS, however, was almost lost, and the only surviving version was pieced together in the early 1960s. Given the age of the film and the state that it existed in for many years, we are lucky to have any copy at all today. The latest DVD release is the best I have seen so far, but it is still a rough picture any way they present it.
I wish I could see some other copy of this film to ensure that. It is credible that people did not start to conserve the old films before it was too late. The theory of the three separate reels would anyway explain the major quality changes during the film. If all today's versions are based on that sixties compilation, the present DVD may be the best version there is available any longer.

I bought that DVD yesterday and because I have seen that VHS version before this version looked better. It´s nice to see, that in Finland there is another Marx-brothers fan :)
I started my Marxes hobby with DVD's. I bought both of those boxes and I think they were generally a fine investment. Paramount box DVD extras were few, but were good ones. MGM box had more stuff, but little of it was related to the Marxes.
It is easy for our forces to find a way to Belgium, just follow a Russian bus that is heading for Bruxelles. Our first troops will be there when your recruits are still filling some sort of forms asking "Are you going to defensive or offensive war" or "Is this war to be fought at Waterloo, Ypres or Ardennes area?". Only considerable difficulty for Finnish troops will be the season, because the army is equipped only with wintergear. More snow, better it for Finns.
After Belgium is conquered, Finns will replace the Manneken Pis with a statue of their President Tarja Halonen. It will be called thereafter 'Pisseken Halonen'.
And that's a female president! That won't be much of a fountain anymore! Just a small puddle! :))
If you want snow to fight that war, pick the Ardennes. Also great place for kayaking. I'd have trouble locating Waterloo myself. Of course Ypres is where the trenches are.
Are there actually Russian busses heading for Brussels? They don't look like tourists I suppose?
Matroesjka's?? I never even watched that when it was tv here. I must watch a repeat if they start exporting a Belgian series to Finland. I checked the imdb message board and they're asking for DVDs... I thought WTF?
Thanks, interesting review. I knew it was produced by VTM, a commercial station here which isn't known for great quality. They produce a lot of game shows and stupid sitcoms. Which is why I didn't watch it in the first place! This must be an exception. The actors I do know from other programs.. Wim Opbrouck is well known as a comedy actor. Frank Aendenboom was in many films... Tom Van Dyck, Axel Daeseleire.... all very talented actors. Luk Wijns was a stand-up comedian actually... I definitely have to watch that. Was it popular in Finland?
One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got in my pajamas I'll never know.
The subject matter turned many of the viewers off, but as the series was not the most typical, it was esteemed high by everyone who had actually seen it. It definitely was not pornography although there was much striptease. It more showed what happened backstage and how the girls felt about it.
Where you do spot the beginning of each reel exactly?
The quality could be improved quite a bit. A few year ago in England there were two reels of old Dad's Army episodes (BBC comedy series) discovered in someone's gardenshed. Episodes completely missing from the BBC archives and considered lost. The reels were digitally scanned and restored frame per frame, erasing every scratch. And that's just a sitcom. Look at the restoration of Fritz Lang's M for example. The Cocoanuts deserves a similar treatment.
Ah, all this is just to ignore the fact that the DVD-purchasing customers have had their leg been pulled. $omeday they will relea$e the fully re$tored ver$ion too, which everyone will buy, or steal.

Yeah, those cheap DVDs are the problem. They're all available in a nice collection with a few extras. A company won't invest in restoring it just to bring an expensive DVD on the market. It would be strictly fans only.
M was beautifully restored by the Munich filmmuseum. The Cocoanuts needs a sponsor like that.
I think that you are wrong cl19130, because a three reeler movie would be about 25 minutes long, and a reel is max. 10 minutes long. This movie is about 90 minutes long, the preview versoin of it was 140 minutes long, and it had a romantic subplot with Zeppo, we can still what is left of that: he meets a girl in the party scene, outside of the room
I am not sure what is the real problem of the film quality issue, I don't think that any preservation could work out miracles and it is already an achievement that this big part of the film has been preserved. The most striking feature is the varying quality of the film. Scratch removal is not that difficult operation but if the film negative is already weak there is really no way to improve it.
The Apple Scruffs Corps, 05 This is a song from the show the 'muscleman'.
