Tribute to the pioneers of cinema...?

Hi! When watching the movie, I noticed something interesting. At around the 49 minute mark, when the first slow-motion shots get introduced, there is a also a sequence involving a horse. You see it running in slow motion, but the sequence is stopped on two ocassions, both when the horse has all four legs in the air at the same time. Could this be a nod to "Sallie Gardner at a Gallop" (1878) and its story of origin? I know there are a lot of movie buffs on this particular forum...what do you think? Was that intentional or just a coincidence?
