The first 'music video?'

This film changed not only my confidence in silent movies, but also my approach to the music in film. I'm a huge fan of Michel Gondry and Spike Jonze as well as other contemporary artists in the music video business and this film is one of the finest mergings of cinematography and music I've ever seen. Do you suppose this could be considered some sort of epic music video, decades ahead of its time?

The music is an addition from 2001

It seems there are several scores for this film. The version I saw also had a few relevant sounds such as clanking, horns, etc, which seemed to add realism, in a way. I'm sure it was never intended as a music video. Every theater it was originally shown in would have had a different sort of music, possibly just a piano player.
