Silent and sound versions were combined
They remade this film, originally silent, as a sound picture. Problem is, Louise Brooks scarpered to Europe after the silent versin was made. So the actors in the original had to loop their dialogue (not very good synching on their part), but Paramount had to use a voice actress to do Loiuse's dialogue. It was as if whiney-voiced Lina Lamont was looping Kathy Selden's dialogue in "Singin' in the Rain." Whatever actress did the dubbing must have been the girlfriend of some executive, ie, she was not hired because her voice reminded anyone of Helen Hayes or Ethel Barrymore.
