Eustace Tilley

Damnedest thing! I saw this movie tonight and noticed something weird in the second half. There are several interior shots of the cabin which include a group of pictures mounted on the far wall behind the characters in the foreground. Among the pictures is a large and unmistakable image of the monocled New Yorker mascot Eustace Tilley! He first appears in the scene where Roddy has returned to the cabin during the horse roundup.

There is no mistaking it. Let's see...In 1928, the New Yorker magazine would have been three years old; still struggling financially, with a small circulation and virtually unknown outside New York City. I can only assume that some set dresser tore the cover off an issue and mounted it on the wall, thinking that it would serve as a vaguely appropriate image of an antique young gentleman. He (or she) couldn't have known that it would eventually become one of the most famous corporate icons ever.
