Vote for the DVD release.

To anyone that regularly looks up silents on IMDb this might look a little familiar. I am posting this same topic on several message boards, all of which I feel are silent masterpieces that are long overdue for a DVD release. So if you have seen my other posts I apologize because this might seem a little repetitive (but don't let it stop you from voting for The Wind also). I have read the other posts about the supposed release at the end of this year but I cannot find anything to support it. I have also signed the petition at petitionspot.com. Perhaps if we all get together, we can change this. For anyone not aware, Turner Classic Movies has a feature on their website called "homevideovote". It is basically an area where you can vote for movies that aren't available on DVD and TCM will "routinely send your votes to major Home video distributors responsible for releasing classic movies on to DVD." Many titles that gather enough votes often get DVD distribution. So if anyone enjoys this movie as much as I do just go to the link that I've provided below and click "VOTE" in the "homevideovote" section on the right side of the page. You'll be instructed to enter an email address to prevent multiple voting and then you can submit your vote. As of right now this film only has 117 votes. It is a little behind in the race but if we all vote it can change. Keep this post alive so others can see it and continue to vote for the release. Just reply and put "I Voted" so others will know.

yep, i voted. its absurd that this isnt available.

I could not agree with you more. It's ridiculous how many of our American-silents are not available on DVD. Don't get me wrong, I love foreign-silents as well (especially German Expressionism and Scandinavian), but I wish that Kino, Image, and especially Criterion would release a few more silents that were made in America. Notice how the only Lillian Gish DVD releases are several of her collaborations with D.W. Griffith. I do enjoy these but I wish someone would release some of her MGM silents, such as The Wind, The Scarlet Letter, and La Boheme. What I find the most absurd is that there is not a single King Vidor silent on DVD. I mean seriously, there are so many to pick from: Wild Oranges, The Big Parade, The Crowd, The Patsy, Show People, and once again La Boheme. I wish someone would release a box set with all of these in it, I for one would buy it the first day it was available. And, finally, why have we yet to see any releases from Josef von Sternberg?, such as Underworld, The Last Command, or The Docks of New York. All of these are excellent movies which deserve a DVD release, but it looks like, for now atleast, I will be wearing out my VHS copies.

I voted. Get on the ball, Warner!

reply

What's wrong with Warner being in possession of some of the greatest films of all time and not releasing them?? It's already wrong enough for them to release their great short films as bonus on movies nobody cares about. I'm sure the collector's market is big enough to receive a Sjöström or Gish masterpiece quite well. It is not "random unknown movie number infinite".

I can't complain of the others companies. At least I can get Sunrise on eBay.

I voted.

'Mr President, we cannot allow a mineshaft gap!' - Gen. Turgidson, Dr. Strangelove

reply

I voted. However, what I would really like released is the original part-sound version (music, sound effects, a song).

reply

It's now September 2009 and still "the Wind" hasn't been released on DVD. One of the greatest films ever made and still not on DVD, a sad reflection on the world we live in.

Thank goodness I have my old copy, but I'd replace it straight away if it were ever to get a DVD release.

reply

I voted. I don't get why a film selected for preservation by the National Film Registry doesn't have a DVD release. I'm glad it is being preserved, but if it is in some secret chest, it's pointless.

reply

I voted. I have been re-reading my film text book from school trying to watch some of the movies mentioned in it. I am SHOCKED to see so little of the movies listed are actually on US DVD. I watched it on a European DVD (I think it was Italian) but the music was awful. I would love to hear a new score be made just for it.

reply

Well, it's now October 2015 and this movie still isn't available on DVD. So I just voted too.

reply

Glad that it was released on Laser Disc as were a number of other MGM silents such as STUDENT PRINCE, GREED, THE CROWD and THE BIG PARADE. Of those only THE BIG PARADE has made it to DVD and Blu-ray. I least there is an outlet like TCM that shows the silents in prime time.

reply

I agree that the European DVD has terrible music, but the Carl Davis soundtrack on the VHS is perfect - it's played by the "Thames Silents Orchestra"! I wouldn't want any other.

Really, Criterion should be tackling this - the movie is of that quality. Does anyone know how you get through to Criterion?

reply

Criterion has done Night Of The Hunter and The Phantom Carriage, I would think this movie they would jump on. This movie would look absolutely stunning on blu ray.

reply

Amen! I definitely think Criterion should release this as one of their upcoming titles. In addition, I think it would be really amazing to see Criterion put together some supplements to complement this film. I've heard so many good things about this film and even watched Robert Osbourne's Intro and Outro to The Wind on YouTube. It is a shame we are now in 2016 and this film has not been released yet on DVD, Blu-Ray, or even Netflix or Hulu for the general public to see. Even if Criterion could get the rights to release The Wind on Hulu, which they tend to do with a bunch of their films they haven't even released yet on Blu-Ray/DVD, I would be content with just that. I've seen a bunch of silent films but I've yet to see this one.

Dear Prof. Lostiswiz:

When you speak of "the European DVD" do you mean the French or the Spanish edition? The covers look similar, but the two editions have different publishers, and the French edition uses the English title "The Wind" whereas the Spanish edition uses the Spanish title. If the music is lousy on the Spanish edition, it might not be so lousy on the French one. I'm trying to decide which version (if either) to buy.
