What's a tar?

Where does the term "tar" come from as it's used in the title? Anyone know?

That's a name used to call a sailor. A Tar is a sailor. I don't believe its used nowadays. I did find in a dictionary that also says this but it doesn't say from where this term originates from.

Tar is in reference to the tar-like substance (pitch) used to seal/waterproof various parts of a ship, including the hull. Sailors eventually became known as tars.
