There was a lot of emoting in silent movies; over-emphasized facial expressions and over-the-top gestures, but they knew how to tell stories back then. I like the background information but the actual dialogue cards often weren't even necessary. A few background cards are sufficient to set the tone. When the talkie movies came around, they still focused on the story telling for years.
Filmmakers today could learn a lot by watching and studying these older movies. I feel today's movies often focus too much on everything other than the story. They have a lot of dazzle packaged as a movie but the plot is thin or nonexistent.
I am so grateful for old movies; for TCM and other channels that run them continuously; for all the companies that archive and restore them; for the actors and filmmakers that made them; and for the fans who take the time to discuss them on these and other forums.
Woman, man! That's the way it should be Tarzan. [Tarzan and his mate]
