Available on Netflix

I can't believe nobody has written about this film. It's a pretty good movie and it's available on netflix right now. Anyone out there?

It is coming out on DVD this Christmas as part of a Murnau/Borzage set from Fox.

Got this today from Netflix. HORRIBLE, ATROCIOUS, INEXCUSABLE print and transfer. Whoever put this DVD out should be very, very ashamed. That Borzage/Murnau set sounds promising, kind of wish Kino or Criterion would do an edition of this, it's certainly good enough and important enough. But no more SH!T transfers!!, silent film deserves more respect.

I agree about the quality of the print. I was left very disapointed. I loved the movie, but it was so frustrating imagining what the film should have looked like. The movie is definitely good enough to recieve a real restoration.

Same here. What a horrible presentation of an astonishing movie. The only thing as bad as the quality of the visuals is the quality of the soundtrack.

It's like looking at a beautiful painting that someone has covered with mud balls.

Restoration isn't going to do much in this case.

The only thing you can hope for is that better elements surface somewhere in the world.

The kind of people who would comment on this, and similar films, usually connect on either the Classic Film board, or the Silent Film board.

I just saw it for the first time, one of the few Borzage films I hadn't seen, and enjoyed it immensely. It had a few slow moments (a few scenes with too many dramatic glances), but mostly I was in awe of the camerawork, set design, and acting. The scene where Gino walks through the crowd, ends up by the wall, immersed in the passing shadows, was one of the finest silent tracking shots I've ever seen.

I can understand who Scorsese is so impressed by Borzage, not only because of the beauty of the film style, but the emotional power of the image.

(The copy I saw was from a European DVD set, along with Lilium.)

This silent was another of the great Borzage/Palmer collaborations. Palmer who developed the moving camera in Hollywood really showed his smooth camera work here. The flowing and swooping images add to the emotional tone of a beautiful story.

And, - Surprise! - Netflix is finally distributing a 20th Century Fox Connect DVD from its "Murnau, Borzage, & Fox Boxset" instead of Netflix el-cheapo Westlake Entertainment knock-offs of other classic William Fox Productions.

Watch this flick to see 1928 film technology that will knock your socks off!

Sadly, Netflix is sending out in 2015 the 2007 Westlake Entertainment DVD of Street Angel, which I've just watched.

The image and sound quality on that Westlake product are terrible, not at all like the high quality Fox DVD that I watched in 2013 (see my post below). The Westlake product may be cheaper for Netflix to distribute, but it's poor quality will turn off many customers.
