The Photography

Lang really pulled out all the stops in filming Spies. The depth of field in black and white cinematography here is stunning. Sharp focus in shots including both close-up and distance is not expected in a 1927/28 movie.

Layout of the scene with criss-crossing of up- and down-stairways in the bank is probably studied by cinematography students today.

If Lang was forced to cut his budget for Spies after his binge on Metropolis, it sure didn't reduce his filmmaking.

I agree that the cinematography was strong and crisp and seemed modern in quality.
