New DVD

Hah, swell. The (excellent) Tuvan band Yat-Kha (http://www.yat-kha.com/) has announced that a dvd of this fu*king great film is "nearly ready for final testing," and that the subtitles are being translated into about 20 different languages, including Uighur and Welsh. :D This version is apparently the most complete version of the film available. For those who haven't seen it, the band has toured with the film, playing their soundtrack for it live. Their soundrack will be featured on the dvd. Great show, if you ever get the chance. http://www.btinternet.com/~marekpytel/yatkha.html

Firstly, I'm a silent film fan, a Russian film fan and a silent Russian film fan to some extent but this is not a great Russian film. The last 5 minutes are rousing but its problem is the opening 115 minutes which are incredibly ponderous.

As a silent film fan, a Russian film fan, and a silent Russian film fan I've got to disagree - this is a great silent film, a great Russian film, and a great Russian silent film. It's not quite as good as Pudovkin's Mother, but it's still pretty fantastic. The story is compelling throughout, and it's got style coming out the wazoo. It's also pretty gorgeous, cinematographically.

It's also nonsense, historically speaking, but that's beside the point.

I suppose on a clear day you can see the class struggle from here
